This one is always tough for me to describe. The story appears simple, and like a typical horror plot that winds up in plenty of movies these days. BUT… all is not what it appears for this movie, in multiple ways.
I should re-iterate; this is a HORROR-first slasher movie, with a dark comedy injection. There are laugh out loud moments, and a few where you feel pretty bad for laughing, but again, plenty of blood and terror drives the story.
The plot? Well, without going to deep, Mom and Dad are hosting their many children plus spouses/partners for an anniversary weekend at the nice, large, good ol’ vacation home. What begins as an attack on the family home morphs into a plot of terror and turmoil as the family attempts to work together and face the odds.
With ample blood and guts, mostly in a realistic manner, the viewer needs to be able to take the violence in order to find the humor, which is *mostly* in the latter act(s). There are some vicious and creative kills, and the low budget did not hold this film back at all. Everything works well, from the basic-yet-enhanced story, the subtle acting that holds true to the respective characters, and the overall slick presentation. Repeat viewings can reveal some nuanced character interactions between the parties involved.
