A semi-autobiographical film by Kevin Smith, The 4:30 Movie is a sweet and nostalgic take on theater hopping, and the love of movies. Taking place in the 1980s, Brian David (Zajur) has finally done the unthinkable and mustered up enough gusto to ask out his long-time crush Melody Barnegat. She agrees to meet him at the 4:30 showing of “BuckLick” which is based on a detective book they have a shared history with.

To kill time, and doing what he does presumably most every day anyway, Brian meets up with pals Belly (Northup) and Burny (Cirillo) who chide him in disbelief and/or jealousy for making a move on Melody. The trio decide to hit up an early showing of “Astro Blaster and the Beaver Men” before jumping into other movies.

However, theater owner Manager Mike (Joeng) gets in the way of their plans, resulting in Belly’s banishment from the establishment. Will Brian and his pals be able to navigate the treacherous waters of breaking Belly back into the shows, getting into ‘R’ rated films, and bitching at each other for trying to grow up a bit?

The jokes may be a bit crude for some, as it is a Kevin Smith feature, however honestly, it’s relatively light all things considered compared to most of his other films. There is more appealing and fun in the script than hard-edged wisecracks. The setting is great for the general sentimentality, and fits the showcase theme of the love of a day at the movies.

The kids act like kids would, both immature and at the same time learning and growing, and mostly life to them is a total blast. Each character has their own focal points in life, and main star Brian David is a sympathetic and thoughtful individual to spend time with during his exploration of life and love. There are some really good lines, and some poignant moments of clarity in-between jokes and hijinks. Cameos galore round out this pleasant and mostly harmless time at the movies.
