Mickey (Skarsgård) tells Jules (Monroe) to think of Florida: the sights, the sounds, the smells. It’s the one and only goal, and this is the very last robbery.
The Stop-n-Gas convenience store hold up barely goes well, as the couples’ animal masks flop around and inhibit all actions. After fumbling their way to cash, and speeding out of town, this is it, right now, next stop: FLLLOOORRIIIDDDAAA!!!!
Until moments later our young and in love bandits are out of gas. Money, they stole, gas, they did not refill. Their remote forest road only offers them so many choices, so they stop and consider options. After refocusing efforts, the couple spots a mailbox just up the road, leading to a very nice secluded home. A crowbar gains entry and our criminals are back in action, looking for extra loot and a new ride to Florida.
They find no sets of spare keys, and that the fruit is fake, which is just the first surprise. Jules suggests a creative boost, so our genius heroes do a plethora of drugs. Our lovebirds come up with the best plan, and everything goes swimmingly.
Villains is a darkly comic film which turns many usual plot conventions on their heads. The acting is solid and reinforces the serious, yet funny atmosphere. The writing gives enough tension and plenty of levity, with good enough characters (even if you don’t really like any of them) and unexpected story twists.
If you are down for a bit of a wild ride and can handle a bit of violence, try Villains.
