In a World… is a comedy about voice-overs, especially the famous titular words in classic epic movie trailers. While movie trailers have less narration these days, the deep manly introductions were typical through the 80s, 90s and early 2000s. Movie hype-men would help slick edited action movies explode onto the screen.
Carol Solomon (Bell) lives with her famous trailer narrating father Sam Soto (Melamed) while she tries to grow her own voice coach career, where she is tired of celebrities like Eva Longoria. Her father is supportive as hell also, being unable to break off a piece of his voice as it is an impossible conceit, but Carol needs to face it anyway, the industry does not crave a female sound. She should stick with the accents. He decides to stop “enabling her emotional handicap” despite her freelance work not paying much. She moves out.
A new industry “it” movie is hitting the scene soon, and the word on the street is that a trailer will hit soon with the words “In a World…” opening its narrative. The voicework world is on fire, enamored with the opportunity to be the one to land the role. Obviously, Sam and his agent Gustav (Marino) feel it’s Sam’s role to lose, as he is already the most well-known trailer voice actor and has the gravitas.
As Carol winds up interested in the gig also, everything works out perfectly and there are no problems, like always. Or not. If you can handle some usual life drama and some jokes, check out In A World… it’s pretty funny, fully entertaining and very well acted. The side characters all shine even in bit roles, and it is crafted with care. Remember, a voice is not just a blessing, it’s also a choice.
