Guy Ritchie Covenant Poster

While it is set during battle, The Covenant is more than a war movie as it tells a personal tale of heroism and redemption. Master Sergeant John Kinley (Gyllenhaal) leads a special team deep in Afghanistan following leads into Taliban IED makers. Native interpreter Ahmed (Salim) joins the American squad in order to help translate and communicate with the locals.

Unfortunately, Ahmed is taking the job of the last local interpreter, which lost his life along with one of Kinley’s squad. Ahmed knows the danger and is looking to get his wife and child out of the country. Interpreting will help secure necessary visas.

As Kinley and his men head out, Ahmed proves his worth understanding both terrain and local customs. Eventually the surrounding war hits Kinley’s squad again, and he must work with Ahmed to survive. What ensues is an intense and harrowing journey for the two men, and a strong bond formed because of it.

Based on a true story, Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant is an exciting, satisfying and personal wartime tale of unbridled heroics and an unstated vow of survival. The acting is superb, and it is expertly shot. The tension is strong, and it paints a reality of other aspects of war that are lesser seen.
