The writers and sometimes directors pair of Daley and Goldstein have been on a roll putting out fun scripts for pretty great movies in the last bunch of years. This time they performed both duties, rolling the dice and putting some heart and wit into the fantasy world of Dungeons & Dragons.
I was pretty sure that this would not be a movie for me, and after seeing the trailer I was also pretty turned off. BUT, I gave it a chance, and am very glad that I did. I would implore audiences to at least check it out, as it brings sorcery, comedy and questing action to the screen with a very well-made adventure. The plot is fairly solid, but a lot of fun to experience as a first time viewer, so give it a shot.
What begins as a typical tale of a questing band of adventurers is fleshed out via excellent dialogue, strong acting and fun visuals, all accompanied by strong character backstories and story arcs. The world feels real, energetic and alive, with the differing characters naturally settling into the multitude of environments. Most all jokes land, and the plot gives our adventurers a ton to do. While the runtime is a tad long, there is nothing really that I would think of to cut or even shorten by much, and the creativity lasts through to the end credits.
Fans of Dungeons & Dragons likely found a million references to the game and rulesets, however even those with no game context can enjoy the film thoroughly. It is a very fun time all around. See this one, even if fantasy type movies aren’t typically your thing. I don't think this film was a box office force, but I truly hope we get a sequel and have revisited it on several occasions since its release.
