This must have been an interesting script pitch. The plot revolves around a group of people waking up unsure of what is going on or where they are, yet finding out very fast that they are in a deadly game of some sort. As a group of confused and gagged people wake up in a forest, it is up to them to survive whatever may be coming, and figure out what to do to stay alive.
Opening with a group text, a member “Ted” wants to tell people a secret. No judgment is promised by the others. He shares a crude GIF of a turtle humping a boot. Apparently, he is strong with maturity. The group then get excited making jokes about heading off to a “manor” to hunt some deplorables.
Next, we jump to a plane. Total douche salad Richard (Howerton) complains about the private jet food limitations and how he already had caviar yesterday. Finally, a glass of champagne calms his fumes. But then… odd happenings occur. Another man is very confused and stumbling around the plane. A doctor helps him briefly. Or wait, is he helping? What is going on? Chaos and more chaos hits, until high heels solve the problem.
So, this is plane full of seemingly rich assholes, and crazy behaviors. As the plot creeps forward, insanely violent events lead to a discovery of nefarious rich liberal voting elites. The actual story to this movie is a dark political satire and dark comedy layered with tons of blood and guts stacked on top.
A Hunger Games type opening changes quickly into something very different. If you can stand a lot of body parts with your dark comedy, this one has a fairly bonkers plot and some comedic political takes. Just know the violence is visceral to go along with its dark comic edge.
The Hunt is very well shot, and has some killer performances especially from total bad ass Betty Gilpin. The movie will likely get a divided response based upon who is viewing it and how able they are to handle political statements. Is it the best movie ever? Nah, but it’s a fairly nutso whirlwind of elements. Plus, you get a bonus pig with a shirt on.
