Over Your Dead Body Ver4

Advertising commercial director Dan (Segel) is struggling to give a shit about getting the smart phone high enough in the shot frame while his assistants bicker on set. After the day winds down, he talks to workers about his wife, Lisa (Weaving) and their mountain retreat this weekend. She has a dangerous trek planned by herself through steep terrain. Eek. No one pays him much mind. He visits his father, Michael (Guilfoyle), in his retirement home, but there is only so much interest in exchanging memories.

Finally, it’s cabin getaway time. Dan picks his wife Lisa up and they make us wonder why they are married. Lisa has a new play she hopes to get a part for, but the director is a kind of a pretentious asshole. Dan is just a film director, so what does he know. Hard to imagine how they will survive each other this weekend alone in the woods. Many surprises are incoming however… As things get snarky, they also get fairly insane and a bit bloody as well. Strap in and have a good time.

Over Your Dead Body is a remake of a 2021 film “The Trip,” which was an enjoyable time. This one mirrors it in plenty of setup ways while presenting some new jokes and story bits just to keep it interesting. If you have seen The Trip, then you already know a lot of what you are in for “surprise” wise, but that doesn’t take away the entire experience as there is still a lot of fun to be had.

The acting is a strong point with the two leads as anchors, just as the case was with the original film. The storyline begins to get more and more chaotic, but having such good actors for both of these parts brings the gravity needed to make it all work and hold the viewer’s attention. As fiery tantrums blow up into storms of revenge that then twist into tornadoes of criminal lunacy, Over Your Dead Body is a pretty good time in general.

If this is your first time with this story you should have a pretty good time and experience a mostly hard to anticipate twisting and turning time. You don’t really need to like the characters to enjoy the film, and mostly the dialogue and story is strong enough for at least one viewing. The acting remains a strong point from Segel and Weaving who are a nice companion to the original film’s couple also. It’s pretty funny and a nutty time overall.
