Corrective Measures – Review

Based on a graphic novel, Corrective Measure proves that not all comic book movies are created equally, and ultimately this one does not get a recommendation from me. As a man named Jack Jeffrey is beaten in an underground parking lot by dangerous armed criminals, including some beast-looking dude, things are odd and violent. Before Jack is killed however, a black trenchcoat wearing man with a red cross on his chest named Walter Anthony Locke aka Payback (Payne) appears and knives a thug in the back before blasting away most of the others with big pistols.

The last two hoodlums left? A normal looking, but apparently bulletproof dude, and the monster face guy. Here a comes kung-fu fight, and then a swift K.O. on Mr. Beast-Face who crumples to the ground. Then Payback steps to beast guy’s face and puts his thumbs in his eye and pops them, because what the fuck???

Payback then deals with Jack, his actual target. Some information is revealed, and then the police show up to take Payback into custody. Credits begin and the exposition of the setting hits. The world has devolved into fire, plague and mutation. Devastation across the globe from ‘the pulse’ has destroyed plenty of the Earth. Resources are scarce, and acute radiation syndromes spreads.

But then… dozens of humans with unique powers show up across the earth. The superhuman rights act is passed, and they are ushered into a holding facility before the San Tiberon Ubermax prison coming in the fall… Here comes Payback ready to hit the joint. Ever wanted a superhero prison drama? No? Well, here you go.

Corrective Measures likely attempts to adapt its source material; however, I have not read it so I don’t know how close it is. All I can do is explain this film’s overall quality, which for me was really only so-so at best. The lower budget side of things can still be okay, but in this the lack of money was felt in most of the runtime, and led to some boring scenes.

The story itself did not feel all too new or fresh, and it moves fairly slowly on top of that. While there are some actors I like featured in this, they were mostly collecting a check, and I have no problem with that. There were attempts made to make this a decent flick, so it’s not a total loss, but I mostly found it boring due to its basic plot, and mediocre production values. I would say if this all interests you, try the comic first as the “3.5” below may be a generous score.
