Blink Twice’s plot summary is mostly simple: working class girls Frida (Ackie) and Jess (Shawkat) stumble their way into an invite from reformed asshole/billionaire Slater King (Tatum) to his private island resort to party with his friends. How could anyone say no?! From that point on, it is a beach house fantasy full of booze, drugs and sexy companions.
Some mysterious happenings have our guests questioning their surroundings, however overall life is a dream for Frida and Jess, and they mingle with their new friends like Cody (Rex) and his cold-shouldering girlfriend Sarah (Arjona). Is everything as dreamlike as it seems, or are our heroines somehow in some kind of danger?
Blink Twice is a divisive horror movie that in my opinion is well done and truly devious and terrifying. I do understand while people may not like it at all, and mileage may vary, but it’s hard to deny that the underlying plot is distressing and traumatic. It is not for the typical horror crowd that want a quick slasher and is more of a psychologically harrowing affair. It is the first movie directed by actress Zoë Kravitz, and in my opinion does its job well.
The plot feels way too real, which was likely the point, and is ultimately very chilling. While it has a satisfying conclusion, the road to get there is full of uncomfortable themes and story beats, and plenty of blood and guts. Check this horror movie out if you have a strong mental constitution. It’s not so much that it is too violent to handle or anything, but its story is pretty messed up when it’s all said and done.
