Bottoms Xlg

High school friends PJ (Sennott) and Josie (Edebiri) have been struggling to get their respective hot cheerleader crushes to notice them. PJ wants to finally talk to Brittany. Josie really wants Isabel (Liu). Tonight is the fucking night!! They are gonna get out there, and get those hotties.

A totally clever high school comedy, Bottoms features clever jokes and awkward situations galore. Hazel (Cruz) is a friend, but most everyone else in school is uninterested in the low social levels which our two main stars sit in. Why care about nobodies when the football team is there?!?!

PJ and Josie have literally zero game, coming off as awkward weirdos when they try to shoot their shot at the carnival. They are about ready to give up entirely. However… Hazel accidentally misinterpreted something the girls said, and all of a sudden the pair are seen as thuggish ruggish tough girls who spent the summer in Juvie.

Our goofy social nobodies wind up with strange popularity as they lead a girls only “self-defense” club, which winds up more of a fight club. This leads to all sorts of shenanigans, per usual comedy rules. Time to root for the social Bottoms, maybe they can figure it out after all, and there is nowhere to go but up.

This movie is very good and felt under the radar. The snark is strong, the jokes are clever, and the satire bits land fairly smoothly. The young cast rock their exaggerated and ridiculous roles well, especially the insanely over the top football team. The main two girls have great chemistry and sell the awkward social aspects their characters revel in very well. Marshawn Lynch is great in this; he must have been there so he didn’t get fined.
