Enhance your calm and chill with the futuristic society in Demolition Man, a slick and funny actioner from the early 90s. Beginning in the futuristic and dark world of 1996, Detective John Spartan (Stallone) is after notorious criminal Simon Phoenix (Snipes). While Spartan catches his man, a large explosion muddies the event’s waters, and Spartan is implicated in negligence in having rushed into the scene too quickly and caused additional casualties.
Both Spartan and Phoenix are sentenced to a suspended animation/cryogenic punishment. As the years pass, the prisoners remain in their frozen state, however in 2032 Phoenix is miraculously freed and sets out for carnage. The futuristic society has eliminated violence and is unsure how to contain this new threat, so a relic of the past, Spartan, is also brought into the future to join the fight.
While Demolition Man is an action movie through and through, it has a lot of fun with its setting, dialogue and take on society. Yes, it is basically a good versus evil shootout explosion fest, but its fun futuristic take makes it stand out. There are no drugs, violence, swearing, sex, salt, alcohol, or basically most anything risqué allowed in the serene and happy Los Angeles of 2032.
Cultures clash as the 90s action hero collides with the sterile world of tomorrow. The cast is great and action soars, some jokes land and a few don’t, but the tone of the film somehow works as both an action and fun sci-fi romp.
