Don’t Think Twice revolves around a live-performing improv group struggling to get by in life, while loving their time on stage. While the group has a strong following for amateur theater, they all have aspirations of making it to the “big time,” and in this movie that revolves around the SNL-like show “Weekend Live.”
The crew of players perform their act, enjoying each other’s work and comedic timing skills. They are great at what they do, but all of that is put in jeopardy when it is discovered that a Weekend Live scout will be at an upcoming show. What plays out afterwards is an all-too-real story of human success, failure, passion, fear, pride, envy, support, jealousy, and the ins-and-outs of personal relationships.
While a total slice-of-life film, it rings true for the most part even to those that have never been on the stage at all, with most themes applying to all of the viewers lives in some way, shape or form. It dives into the cast’s individual lives and point of views, all of which ring true.
If you have seen Mike Birbiglia’s stand-up shows, then you have an idea for the tone and themes of this movie, which are a dive into the reality of stage performers of all kinds, while keeping a firm footing on reality’s ground. It is introspective, and down-to-earth, while remaining funny and idealistic.
Check it out if you want a quick and light drama that gives a lot to think about, despite the title explicitly telling you otherwise.
