Miami shylock Chili Palmer (Travolta) has a falling out with a rival gangster Ray ‘Bones’ Barboni (Farina), putting him at odds with some angry mobsters. He flies to Las Vegas to track down a mark that owes him money, however learns his target won a load of dough at a casino and has moved on to L.A. Chili is asked by the casino to collect on their own outstanding debts, which are owed by a schlock director named Harry Zimm (Hackman).

Chili moves onto Los Angeles to find his targets, however finds himself settling in easily to the Hollywood backdrop, having always had a passion for the movies. Upon confronting Zimm, he finds the director has a quality comeback script in his hands that he wants to turn into an award-winning feature. This script however, brings its own complications, including drug dealers and Mexican gangsters.

The Hollywood backdrop provides ample room for zany and nefarious characters to collide, and the films excellent plot keeps shifting so that one never knows what may happen next. The comedy elements are strong, with witty lines and observations of Hollywood sprinkled throughout. While not an “action” movie, the run-time zooms along with fun to be had in most every scene.

The acting is phenomenal, with all characters being brought to life by an A-list cast. Even the bit roles shine, whether the characters are menacing, or outright stupid. Everything is treated with respect to the story and script, which brings a cohesive Hollywood crime romp together with outstanding results.

There are too many good characters and moments to mention, as well as one of the best Danny DeVito roles of all time. Find this movie if you like smart and wacky crime capers, and especially if you appreciate characters with passions for filmmaking.

While there is a music-industry centric sequel “Be Cool,” that script and movie are a bit of a letdown compared to this fantastic film. Be Cool has its moments, but for the most part, just stick with Get Shorty. There is also a TV series of the same title and subject material, however I have not seen that and cannot comment on it!
