An “Adam Sandler adjacent" project featuring his pals from his movies, Grandma’s Boy is a movie that was absolutely hated by critics, but treated a bit better by viewers. As long as you understand the type of humor you are in for, there is a lot of fun to be had in Grandma’s Boy. While it may not be classy, it’s definitely cleverer than it was initially given credit for.

As video game programmer Alex (Covert) and his roommate Josh (Loughran) play video games at home on the couch and take bong tokes, his landlord Yuri (Schneider) busts in, deciding that since the last six months of rent were not paid, he has to kick the pair out. Alex is confused, as he’s never missed giving Josh his rent money, however Josh breaks down in tears over the massage therapists at Madame Camae’s Filipino Palace, explaining where the money went. Unfortunately for Alex and his smoking lamp, it means he is out on the streets. Josh can stay at the Palace.

Alex’s first stop is his buddy and drug dealer Dante’s spot, who offers him excellent strains such as The Incredible Hulk, Green Monster, or Bling. The problem is, Dante has a lion coming in soon, so there’s no room. Alex picks up weed and moves on, since he has a wedding to attend. There he runs into his grandmother, who mentions she has a spare room to stay in. After weighing options like staying with his buddy Jeff (Swardson), he lands at Grandma’s.

Unfortunately, the eviction is wearing Alex down and his energy levels are waning. Doubly unfortunate is the fact that his Zen boss Mr. Cheezle (Nealon) is encouraging “programmer genius” J.P.’s (Moore) new RPG epic Eternal Deathslayer 3 down everyone’s throat, and fast. The new consultant Samantha (Cardellini) is there to make sure it gets done, but finds Alex drooling on his desk, which isn’t the best impression. Of course, Samantha is ultra hot.

As Alex tries to navigate his competitive work environment, a ferocious weed habit, demanding new programming needs, his boss’ dandelion nettle blend tea, J.P.’s matrix-fueled personality, and his desire for Samantha, he finds himself scrambling to cover for his life with Grandma to retain his image. However, he also finds life at his grandma’s spot is not as bad as it seems…

This movie is way better than reviews stated on release, but keep your expectations to a medium level for the best time. Yes, it can be juvenile and presents typical dude-fart humor at times, but if you actually enjoy comedy there’s a solid chance you will laugh. Some of its gross out antics do get a bit ridiculous, but many of the quick lines inserted into the silly script are clever.
