Well…………………………………………………………….
The title says it all, but I’ll try to say a bit more. Hundreds of Beavers is a bonkers comedy featuring looney tunes type logic as a trapper named Jean Kayak (Tews) tries to survive in the frozen wilderness after his apple moonshine business is sabotaged by beavers. After a series of unfortunate events, Kayak has to do his best to fight back against the animals of the forest.
This movie is very wacky in pretty fun ways. Kayak stumbles through snow, trees, water, pinecones, caves, mountains and unexpected beaver constructions, until he finally has a true goal in life again: winning over the merchant’s (Mancheski) daughter, the furrier (Graves).
The film features no “real” dialogue, other than an opening jangle. It truly does play out like a cartoon on screen, with exaggeration in the acting, movements, and physics that play out. The costumes are ridiculous and silly in all the right ways to match its action vibes. The zany antics may run a tad long, but for the most part the film delivers new and fun jokes most all of the time, while also dropping callbacks to prior setups or scenes.
There winds up being a lot to watch on the screen, despite a bit of a slower start. There is a reason for most all of the set-up, despite the very plain story. The creativity here is very strong, and most all audiences young and old should find most of the jokes entertaining.
For about $150,000 these guys made a great film. Just don’t over think this one, take it at face value.
