Successful Portland-based businessman and family man Earl Brooks (Costner) has a gargantuan secret: he leads a secret life as a serial killer, along with his alter ego, personified as “Marshall” (Hurt). Unable to fully rid himself of this hidden identity, Mr. Brooks has no control when Marshall re-surfaces, and goes out into the world as the notorious “Thumbprint Killer” to strike again.
Despite meticulous preparation, his most recent crime goes awry, sending him spiraling into the crosshairs of the law, as well as additional complications which threaten every part of his existence. While added twists and sub-plots may be a bit over the top and convoluted, the ride is quite fun and offers thrills and chills alike.
The actors have a lot of fun with their roles, and everyone does quite a good job. Mr. Brooks’ calm demeanor is played off of by the maniacal performance of Marshall. The detective on the case (Moore) is dealing with her own personal issues, but is determined to get her man. With all the surrounding chaos, will Mr. Brooks get away this time, or will the detectives finally get their man?
Overall, this movie never really took off with critics or audiences, but it has a lot to offer. It is both fun at times, and scary at others, with plenty of suspense. Despite my personal aversion to Dane Cook’s personality and comedy, he is perfect for his role and does a great job fitting in with the surrounding stars.
The movies below are not thaaat similar, as this movie is more akin to the show Dexter, but for now I am not including shows as comparisons.
