Nyles (Samberg) and his girlfriend Misty (Hagner) appear a bit bored while they attend their friend Tala’s (Mendes) wedding in Palm Springs. Tala’s sister Sarah (Milioti) gives a unique toast to her sister, with Nyles coming to her rescue to save it from total disaster. The pair spend the evening getting to know each other, before some very strange occurrences happen. Without getting into detail, the events leave Sarah wondering what is going on, and how she was thrust into a surreal adventure.
Palm Springs is super entertaining on multiple levels. It may use a plot convention that many-a-movie have used before, however it never feels anything but fresh. The cast delivers witty and ridiculous lines with ease, and multiple human elements are explored through the story. The film is very funny and very entertaining and leaves a feel-good vibe lingering well after the credits roll.
I really didn’t know what I was getting into when I started the movie, and it’s best viewed that way. I knew it was a comedy, and that was about it. That is very true, and the hilarious nature of the story sets up all sorts of intriguing outcomes to scenes and wedding events.
There is a bit of a fantasy/sci-fi element also, but that does not disrupt the very good time to be had, in fact it enhances what is possible in its storytelling. Great script, great cast, all around great time. This is a really solid comedy and very creative, and is always a lot of fun to watch, or rewatch.
