Deep in the cosmos, Cee (Thatcher) rocks out to old school tunes with her headphones on, while scribbling in her journal and sitting near a window on a space station. Her father Damon (Duplass) scolds her for leaving their cabin, but she retorts that she couldn’t sleep.
The schedule says there is one more ‘run’ down to the planet before the travel line is shut down, which makes Cee nervous. Damon says there is plenty of time to get three cycles done, and catch the sling back to the station. Nothing to worry about. Cee goes back to jamming out to tunes.
The next morning, the pair head down to the forested moon that the station orbits. They look to quickly mine gems, and then get back to the transport as quickly as possible. So… naturally nothing will go wrong, right?
Prospect is a nice little Sci-Fi feature and despite what was likely a modest budget, it looks great. The practical effects and props used go very far. While many of its themes and situations have been in plenty of other works, they are tried and true and still hold up just fine. This somewhat “space western” fits right into futuristic adventure stories.
The acting is quite sound, which helps propel the basic tale through a fairly quick runtime. The appearance and feel of the film are quite well done, as the spacecraft and their systems look natural and overall production values are high. The forested moon has its own 'alive' feeling as well, which is the main setting of the film. With sound direction and a decent script, the tensions of the story feel realistic and it plays out well.
