SO, things did not go very well for poor Ángela (Velasco) during the events of [REC]. How does that ending leave room for a sequel exactly? Well, by starting off with a new point of view character set.
This time we start with copes who have been called to the scene of the apartment building chaos. Their plan is to gear up, mask up, secure the perimeter, and help how they can. They talk over the job as well as usual life chit chat before their leader quiets the group for operations.
They scramble through the gathering crowd and head towards the quarantine area. They are to escort Dr. Owen (Mellor) from the Ministry of Health into the building. They lost contact with the last doctor who went in about 70 minutes ago. They know there are at least two dead inside, but details are murky.
[REC] 2 hits about as hard as the first one. It has a bigger budget so it looks a bit sleeker, but it’s the same idea. As the cops head into the scene of the first film, we all know we are in for danger.
I think the only thing that I didn’t love as much about this movie is one of the story twists which introduces a new element to the story as an explanation for events. It takes the themes to a bit different of a place than I expected, and it didn’t completely jive with me. However, it is likely that others may find it enhances the story.
That being said, the movie itself still does a great job of being absolutely terrifying at times, and has a few parts guaranteed to make you say HOLY SHIT. It also is another short runtime horror tale, so it zips by quickly.
If you liked the first film, dip into the second for sure as it moves even faster. If you hated the camera bouncing of the first, you won’t like this any better.
If this thing gets out there, we’d better have an antidote.
