Humor reviews are hard, and a lot of people won’t necessarily vibe with all comedy reviews on here, but I certainly liked this odd one. Its awkward grasp held me strong, waiting for the next turn of events, the story shaking out anxiety-based situational humor left and right.
What is primarily a one-location movie, the story sees college student and “sugar baby” Danielle (Sennott) heading to a funeral with her very loving and very Jewish parents Joel and Debbie (Melamed and Draper). Also present at this funeral event are Danielle’s current “sugar daddy,” her ex-girlfriend, and more. This puts a deep panic into Danielle as she must navigate the waters of her parents, their expectations for her life’s reality, her ex-girlfriend, her super helpful sugar daddy and her actual reality. One could almost classify this as situational horror instead of comedy.
I love awkward situations and ridiculous humor that comes out from them, and Shiva Baby is full of just that combined with some accompanying raunch, yet all balanced out with plenty of maturity. The jokes landed more times than not in this movie, and it was a quality production.
