With a cast of just 5 people, the setting of an apartment interior, and a budget of probably a sandwich, this film will not appeal to everyone. However, adventurous viewers that are in for heaps of quirk and a super odd premise will find some fun here.
As Jane (Anderson) knocks on an apartment door looking for someone that used to live there, Wizard (Obi) says he may be of some assistance. This is Houston, Texas, and a Detective Jancey (Graham) gets a note about his “kidnapped daughter”, and if he ever wants to see her again, to follow instructions. This takes him to an apartment complex, where he bitches with his ex, and tells her to watch over his daughter, who is not currently missing. Based on a potential threat however, he follows the note to our one-setting location.
On the way to knock on the note’s specified apartment door, the detective notes a Russian, Ivan (Edwards), as well as Wizard walking by. After a knock, a squirrely woman Jane talks to him through the door, and eventually opens the portal to her abode. Jancey works his way inside to question her about petty crimes in the neighborhood, and find out more about this strange note and apartment.
Once inside, the plot finds a way to introduce some very wacky, yet fun, Sci-Fi concepts. While the concepts are very regular for Sci-Fi films, the devices these utilize are a bit more creative. Infused with offbeat humor and absurd acting, the script takes odd turns and makes silly jokes. Some are quite clever, and others will make you roll your eyes, however for me, the humor worked well.
This absolutely extremely low budget affair presents itself as if a wacky 70s flick, which is self-aware and leans into its lack of funding without losing story quality. The runtime is short, and despite the lack of seasoned actors the atmosphere gels together just fine. Come meet Glenn (or Gary), Jane, Wizard, Ivan and the Detective. It likely won’t be like anything else you have seen this year.
Make sure you flop your beefwagon far enough when you pee to avoid stains.
This is a very tough one to compare to most anything else
