The Hidden – Review

West Hollywood Wells Fargo Bank surveillance footage shows grainy black and white shots of people shuffling in and out of a large lobby area. Then, a shotgun wielding man Jack Devries (Mulkey) shakes up the scene, then looks at the camera, smiles and shoots it.

Outside more shots ring out, and Jack hops in a black Ferrari to lead cops on a chase. Detective Tom Beck (Nouri) and patrol officers setup an armed road block ahead. This will out well for sure for Jack and the car.

So, what the hell was all this about? Is this an all-out action extravaganza?! Apparently, Jack was an upstanding citizen just two weeks prior. Something mysterious is afoot.

Seattle FBI Agent Lloyd Gallagher (MacLachlan) enters Lt. John Masterson’s (Felder) office and tells him Tom Beck has been assigned to him for a task force on the bank shootout incident. He immediately wants to go see Jack in the hospital, and for good cause as shit gets fuuuuucked up fast for Mr. Devries.

This reveals a wild and crazy plot which ups the ante for the film. Things continue to slip from strange to bizarre. As chaos envelops Beck’s world, can oddball Seattle Agent Gallagher stop their dangerous target before more blood is spilled?

The Hidden is a good and creepy plot idea which mostly delivers on its premise. It is a touch silly in the best way, but mostly is played and presented seriously. MacLachlan plays his offbeat character very well and the role shines on repeat viewings.

Law enforcement vs Ferrari loving evil forces may be an oversimplification of the story, and there definitely is more, but The Hidden keeps some of its surprises locked away for viewers to enjoy.

“I need the keys.”

There is apparently a The Hidden II sequel, which returns none of the cast and sounds absuuuurdly bad based on viewer reactions, so try it with tempered expectations.
