Based on a short novel, Crime 101 has a very good cast and some pretty good criminal elements included in the tense at times thriller. While it runs a tad long, the film is a quality and should entertain those looking for daring robberies and quick getaways. Ready to stack heaps of money? Then come along for the ride.
After a swift diamond caper, thief James Davis (Hemsworth) has a slick amount of product to run through his fence Money (Nolte). Problem is, this job got a tad sloppy. His getaway car was damaged, and there was a very close brush with death. That’s okay for now, because the only cop that thinks he is a serial robber, Detective Lou Lubesnick (Ruffalo) doesn’t have many in the department buying into his theory.
Lubesnick figures that many similar modus operandi crimes along California’s Route 101 have been performed by the same mystery criminal. He always chooses non-violent means, and the locations are within access to the long freeway stretch. Lubesnick’s partner Detective Tillman (Hawkins) isn’t so sure about any of this ‘101 Robber’ theory and often casts doubt on it all.
As Davis looks into other scores, the tables are turned as a new thief named Ormon (Keoghan) looks to upend his meticulous processes. More complications arise as insurance agencies enter the picture, and the cops finally start believing in Lubesnick’s possible mystery man theories. Will Davis be able to secure his next score, or will the heat catch up?
Overall, the script for the film is pretty sharp, and most characters are intelligent enough to add tension and reality to the picture. Many of the elements are fairly typical for robbery/caper type flicks, but that is not really an issue for this genre picture as it offers enough to be worth a viewing. The cast rocks and most all of them are given plenty of screen time. The director keeps the film moving along despite it being a bit over two hours, and there is mostly enough plot to keep it all interesting. A well shot flick, Crime 101 hits most of the right notes.
