Dhurandhar: The Revenge – Review

Well, here we are again. Ready for your next four hours? I must assume so, since you’d only be here if you could stand the first 3.5 of part one. So, knowing how that ended, we now understand a bit more about what we’ll get this time.

We begin again with a new Chapter 1 and in January 2000, over in Chakia Colony, Allahabad, in Uttar Pradesh, India. A line of people waits outside of a beautiful but aging structure, including the familiar but younger face of Hamza Ali Mazari (Singh), who at this time goes by Jaskirat Singh Rangi. He is looking for work with his childhood friend Gurbaaz Singh (Sandhu), and is not the man we know from the first part.

That being said, you can see the traits we got to know, as he is cool, calm and collected. He speaks very little and learns his surroundings and the people around him. And where exactly is he now? Inside the home of Atif Ahmed, a local gangster. As his buddy makes a deal to smuggle drugs and trade for guns, Ahmed asks about Rangi and his desire for the military. As some pieces fall into place, Rangi begins his journey that will land him in the identity of Hamza Ali Mazari. Then, we’ll likely find out where things go after the climax of the original.

Mostly this film plays the exact same tune as the first one, as likely it was all crafted and shot at the same time. The focal points allow expansion of the first film’s events as we get more background, but a lot of it was at least implied before. That being said, the events covered here add plenty of context, and it does cover a lot of additional story ground past part one’s ending.

Acting, music, violence and production values remain the same and are of high quality, however again, the unflinching look at violence may be a major turn off for some viewers. It is still ultra bloody, realistic and graphic. Action and fight scenes are tense and well performed. The film finds its groove and never looks back, pushing its actors with tough stunts and wild set pieces. Bullets fly, blood spurts, and angry words are yelled.

If you enjoyed the first then I am sure you are already diving into this one head first. It covers a long range of time again and includes more reflections of society and historical events, however also does include the same propaganda type approach for some of the region’s cultural differences. Is this a satisfying second part? Mostly it is, even if it is too long and lacks a touch of the first part’s focus.
