Silas P. Silas (Method Man) deals specific strains of chronic out of his apartment to cure the peoples’ needs, acting as an herbal doctor. Blaze two and get at me in the morning. As his buddy Ivory (Deezy) rolls through with a hot date that night, he needs something from the Garden of Weeden.
Silas is a professional weed botanist, and is encouraged by Ivory to hit the books and get a real lab. Seems like he needs to take a college qualifying test.
Jamal King (Redman) lives with his strict momma (Horsford) who is encouraging him to go to a real college after spending six years at a two-year Community College. Seems like he needs to take a college qualifying test.
As Ivory unfortunately catches on fire and falls out of his apartment window, and gets hit by a bus, he perishes. Total bummer. Silas uses Ivory’s ashes in a potent strain of marijuana, and later goes to take his college entrance exams. As Silas and Jamal collide at the testing building, they smoke together, finding out that this strain brings Ivory back from beyond the grave.
As Ivory helps his buddies ace the college exams, their scores are so good that they land on Harvard’s campus. Insane hijinks will surely ensue.
How High was not liked by critics and won’t win any awards, and plenty of people won’t vibe with its humor, however I have always liked it since seeing it in theaters. The plot is absurdly silly, the jokes are ridiculous, the acting is exaggerated, but it’s a comedy, and for me, it’s a good time. While not an all time classic, there is more good than bad.
The cast has plenty of good players in it, and they all lean into the insane nature of the story. If stoner comedies are acceptable for you, this one fits the bill. Longtime friends Method Man and Redman have the right buddy chemistry to grow a strong comedy strain. If you dig outlandish humor, take a hit from the bong, grab your Pork Chop O’ Chunky and hit campus with your friends Silas and Jamal.
I’m talkin’ ‘bout pimpin’ been since pimpin’ since been pimpin’ since been pimpin’.
The director is actually Bob Dylan’s son. I have not seen the straight-to-DVD sequel.
