Jay and Silent Bob Reboot – Review

To the Quick Stop Groceries mini-mart we go, now featuring Cock Smoker baked chicken sandwiches next door instead of a video rental store. As Dante (O’Halloran) pulls up and opens the store, a gun to his head from behind is a surprise! A SWAT team hits the chicken joint, looking for a marijuana trafficker or two. They fire teargas inside.

Jay (Mewes) comes zooming out, holding his plants, and dropping his pants. Goodbye horses. Silent Bob (Smith) creeps out next. As the men hit the courtroom after arrest and processing, they meet their lawyer (Long) and site before Judge Jerry N. Executioner (Robinson). Good thing the slick shit lawyer gets them off the hook. Too bad however, that there is a second case on the docket against the pair. Saban Films seeks copyright infringement charges against Jay and Silent Bob…

Well, shit! Underlying rights of Bluntman and Chronic, as well as their civilian identities are owned by the movie company. That means Jay and Silent Bob no longer even own their names!! What!!! Here comes an adventure.

Jay and Silent Bob Reboot kicks the meta up a bunch of notches and delivers a good sequel featuring many familiar faces. It is nice to get check ins from a slew of older film characters. What may seem like a tired idea at this point, this reboot still contains enough clever humor and new spins on the same material.

The jokes are solid, and the story is better than the first Jay and Silent Bob centric feature. There is more emotional heft to the story as well, and this element adds nicely to the blend of comedic insanity. The fun script is well performed, and Kevin Smith infuses his usual energy, and banter into it. It riffs on Hollywood schlock, and is a pretty strong film industry meta satire.
