Mutiny – Review

Oh damn, this one is starting with a car crash! Okay. But now we see a serious looking man named Cole Reed (Statham) in a suit, monitoring all movement in a building lobby. This is a bodyguard waiting for his ultra rich client Tibu Campallo (Tikaram) and his son Kameron (Kular) while the elder makes a business deal to merge his business with another.

Back at the Campallo manor, Reed checks in with the security team and then plays chess with Tibu, a man whose life he once saved. Reed is a former cop, and marine and now focuses on protection duty. When a situation gets tense, Cole is forced into action and his life is forever changed.

So, let’s be real: you’ve seen this movie before. Its plot elements and follow through do not bring anything to the table that aren’t done in other movies multiple times, and usually also better. That being said, does that mean this film is a total crapshoot? Nah.

Statham is doing what he does, and the script reshapes a possible sequel to the movie Plane (by the same director) into its own wanna-be Under Siege Die Hard. The good news is that it’s serviceably done and takes itself seriously, resulting in an okay enough action flick, albeit generic. Annabelle Wallis gets to play a competent female which is nice, and she pairs well with Statham for this adventure into bullets and fists.

It moves along fast enough and is on the shorter side so pacing is okay, but it is not a frenetic time either. In general, action movie seekers will find an okay time here, but don’t expect surprises.
