A group of men enter an elevator. Music is tense. The doors open, and it is the subbasement, which is not what any of these five individuals selected. When they exit to a nice dinner table setting, there is no going back. They make the best of their strange situation, and eat, drink and share tales.
This anthology is again full of twisted plots and devious stories which are meant to thrill, surprise and scare. Keeping the viewer on their toes, the five stories play out, one from each basement elevator rider.
Acting is fine, but the film is of an older style and pacing. I still had fun with it, and its qualities are similar to Tales from the Crypt from the prior year. There are a couple of solid actors which pop up, and the stories are fun.
Vault of Horror was also known as Tales from the Crypt II, and is a similar experience, and acts as a sequel spiritually regardless. While there was an actual Vault of Horror comic series also, the tales of this film are actually adaptations of Tales from the Crypt stories.
“It’s getting dark. We always close before dark. They come out in the dark.”
