As salmon swim upstream against the current to spawn, a non-stop struggle, the circle of life is on full display. As Colin Dense (Sullivan) leads his blindfolded girlfriend Quincy Adams (Romano) into a snazzy restaurant, a romantic evening is upon us. Tammy doesn’t recognize the place, despite Hudson saying it’s their first date spot. Though, technically, it’s not the same restaurant, as that one was torn down, but this is at least built on the same lot!!
The meal gets underway at the French restaurant ‘Restaurant Français’ and quickly turns into a proposal. Quincy looks around for a way out. This is not a good sign. Six months later, and Colin is looking to take his still girlfriend Quincy, somehow, to his buddy Harry Jameson’s (Smith) cabin on a vacation.
Colin has a plan: Assess, Prepare, Execute, Conquer. Right?? What exactly though? Gather kindling to rekindle the relationship at a cabin the woods. Quincy asks her gal pal Tammy (McKenna) to go along also, and Harry is joining the group, too. As the group heads to a romantic getaway, things are off to a strange start. Colin plans to propose, yet again, but he has a twist also: he wants to fake a bear attack and bravely help his girlfriend overcome her fear of bears while proving his worth. What about real bears though…?
Bear with Us has some ridiculous lines as well as situations. It is super low budget and even shot in black and white, but this ads to some of its charm, of which there somehow is plenty. The comedy is decent and the shenanigans are strong. It is both clever and stupid, and a nice balance of both. A decent script made this a passable time and the absurd ideas behind it all push it along well.
The acting is fitting and even quality despite the tuna sandwich budget that the film likely had. The concept is quite silly, yet the execution makes it all an okay time especially if you are into weird and unique comedies. A short and fun time, Bear with Us features all sorts of laughs and fearsome furry animals to avoid.
You’re right, Ranger Rick was the raccoon mascot of the National Wildlife Federation Children’s Magazine.
