Walking in a mine shaft, two jumpsuited and gasmasked people stroll deeper and deeper, looking to make sure they are nowhere near anyone else. Once safe, one figure strips off the jumpsuit, revealing a sexy blonde with a scantily clad body and a sexy little heart tattoo. She smiles and attempts to get her compatriot to join the fun, but instead the unthinkable happens.
It’s Thursday, February 12th. The mineworking men ride carts out of the depths and unmask, throwing jokes about leaving apprentices in the caverns. The laughs continue though the totally normal group shower and then out into the parking lot as the dudes jump into their whips and smash outta there like hell, speeding over to the local town Valentine Bluffs. It’s time for booze and girls and chaos, which one surmises is the daily affair for these gents.
As the miners compete for the attentions of local hotties and look to secure their dates for the dance in two days, shit happens to hit the fan. It’s the first Valentine’s dance in 20 years, and the town is on edge.
Why, you don’t ask? Well, there is a dark history with this town, and the mine. A brutal accident decades prior led to tragedy and a survivor named Harry Warden going a bit loony. But, this was years ago, right? So, no worries now! Piss on Harry Warden and that old legend. The town is going to partayyyy!!!
My Bloody Valentine is a decently solid mystery killer slasher film, full of gore, horror and an ominous and creepy villain. It’s definitely “of the times” being an early 80s flick, but it goes hard when it needs to. For me, the story is only okay, and the characters are only so likeable, so that could be why it never reached Friday the 13th/Halloween heights or popularity. Despite a lesser-known cast, it’s still a worthy watch for slasher fans, and despite some 80s goofiness the cast does a good enough job.
